Ouchijuku bustled as an important post town on the main road that linked Aizu and Nikko in the Edo Period.Even now, over 30 thatched-roof minka (traditional Japanese house) are standing.

Negi Soba
Negi Soba, which is eaten with a long leek instead of chopsticks, is Ouchijuku’s famous food.

Ouchijuku has soba shops and souvenir shops selling traditional crafts as well as private home that providers room and board and cafes that offer sweets.

Yunokami Onsen 湯野上温泉

 

The hot spring town that represents Minamiaizu. It is the closest hot spring town to Ouchijuku, lined with over 20 hotels and as well as private home that providers room and board.

Yunokami Onsen Station
A thatched-roof station building that is rare even in Japan. The waiting room has an irori hearth. It is also known as a cherry blossom location, which draws many tourists in the spring.

Aizu Tajima Gion Festival 会津田島祇園祭

 

The Aizu Tajima Gion Festival (July 22-24) has around 800 years of history and is purported to be one of Japan’s three largest Gion Festivals.

Hanayome Gyoretsu
Among the festival’s events, the Hanayome Gyoretsu (or Nanahokai Gyoretsu), a solemn bridal procession of about 30 women dressed as brides mesmerizes many visitors.

Festival Float
Amid kids’ shouts of “Onsan Yare Kakero,” the festival floats are paraded around town.

Children’s Kabuki
On top of a festival float, local schoolchildren give a full-fledged kabuki performance. This practice came to an end during the Meiji Period, but was revived in 1994.

Hinoemata Kabuki 檜枝岐歌舞伎

 

A long time ago, Hinoemata farmers imitated the kabuki (a style of Japanese theatre) they had seen in Edo (former Tokyo) and performed it in their village; this is said to be the beginning of Hinoemata Kabuki.

Oze National Park 尾瀬国立公園

 

Oze is a natural treasure of Japan, with its numerous mountains and widespread wetlands. It is also known as the birthplace of the “take your trash home with you” movement and also where environmental conservation initiatives are conducted actively.
Mt. Hiuchigatake has an elevation of 2,356m and boasts the highest peak in northeastern Japan; it has also been selected as one of Japan’s 100 famous mountains.

Oze National Park
Boardwalks are laid out around the perimeter of Lake Ozenuma, in a 7 km loop that takes approximately 3 hours to complete.
A shuttle bus runs from mid-May to late October.

Daylily (Nikkokisuge)
Known within Oze for its flowers, the popular Oe Wetlands is carpeted with yellow day lillies, which bloom from early July to early August.

Oe Wetlands
The three larch trees , or Sanbonmatsu, have become a s ymbol of Lake Ozenuma’s largest marsh, the Oe Wetlands.

 

 

Tadami Line 只見線

 

The Tadami Line is a 135.2km train route from Aizuwakamatsu Station in F ukushima Prefecture to Koide Station in Niigata Prefecture’s Uonuma City.

The picturesque scenery seen from the
Tadami Line, which runs through vast nature, is especially a must-see in autumn colors and in deep snowfall. Since the heavy rainfall disasters of 2011, a portion of the route is suspended and replaced by bus service.
  

 

 

Tagokura Lake 田子倉湖

 

Tagokura Lake is a manmade lake that was constructed together with the dam. From National Highway Route 252, which passes by Tagokura Lake , you can look over the entire lake and the mountains of Tadami.

You can ride a ferryboat (reservations not required) and soak up the nature of Tadami from the lake. Takogura Lake View, at the foot of the dam, has a take-out food and souvenirs; it’s also great as a rest stop during a long drive.

Megumi no Mori Forest(Blessed Forest) 恵みの森

 

Tadami Town, which is registered as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, has a 900 hectare beech forest called “Megumi no Mori Forest.”

Mt. Gamodake, the mountain known as “Aizu’s Matterhorn.”

The steep shape of the mountain and the 360 degree view from the top of the mountain are spectacular; you can also see the Tadami River below. Other mountains in Minamiaizu also offer a beautiful view.
  

 

 

Takatsue Ski Area たかつえスキー場

 

Minamiaizu has six abundantly varied ski areas. Among them, Takatsue Ski Area has one of the best ski slopes in the Tohoku region, with an elevation of 1,650m.

With a slope span of 5km, and a diverse 15 courses, this ski area is also known for its powder snow, nicknamed “Takatsue powder.”

First Track & Snow CAT Tour
At Takatsue Ski Area, we have a mountaintop course that opens before the lifts start running, called “First Track,” where you can enjoy fresh powder snow that no one has skiied in yet.
In the Snow CAT Tour, you c an view the sparkling morning reflecting off the snow from the top of the mountain.

Starry Sky
Minamiaizu has few street lights and is the perfect place forstargazing . At the “HOSHINAJO” event, you can view the stars without any special equipment at Takatsue golf course located 1,000m above sea level. “Hoshinajo” means “How about the stars?” in the local Aizu dialect.

Minamiaizu’s sake uses carefully selected rice and freshly melted snow and has received high national acclaim, including a gold medal at the Japan Sake Awards.

Yamodo Ryori (Yamodo Cuisine) 山人料理

 

Yamodo Ryori is the traditional cuisine of Hinoemata Village.

Yamodo Ryori
It refers to the food that was made in the olden days by men who worked in the mountains with ingredients picked on the mountains and salt and miso that they had brought with them. You can still eat this cuisine today at ryokan in Hinoemata Village.
  

 

 

Onsen 温泉

 

Minamiaizu has hot spring inns located in mountain villages, as well as highland hotels and day spas – a wealth in hot spring varieties.

Iwaburo Onsen
Tokusa Onsen was discovered about 1,000 years a go and was reportedly a hidden hot spring in Aizu. Iwaburo Onsen is located in Tokusa Onsen. where hot spring water gushes from the riverbed you can hear the murmur of the stream and heal both your mind and body.

Ishiyu Onsen
700 years ago in the Kamakura Period. This is a mixed public bath on the riverside located in a small bathhouse nestled between large rocks.

Akaiwa-So
This onsen is fille d with ample water drawn from a hot spring source, which is a charming reddish color. The 100% free-flowing hot spring water contains plentiful amounts of iron, thought to be effective for cuts and skin disease.

From Tokyo Station

 

①JR Ginza Line (17 minutes) → Asakusa → Tobu Railway (130 minutes) → Kinugawa Onsen → Yagan Railway (50 minutes) → Aizu Kogen Ozeguchi
 → Aizu Railway (20 minutes) → Aizu Tjima
 → Aizu bus (70 minutes) → Hinoemata Village

 

Asakusa → Aizu Tajima (Minamiaizu Town), you can use the direct limited express “Revaty Aizu”. About 3 hours from Asakusa to Aizu Tajima (4 round trips a day).
The Limited Express Revaty Aizu runs directly between Asakusa and Aizu-Tajima (Minamiaizu Town), for a journey of about three hours. The train is equipped with conveniences like English signage, free wifi, and electrical outlets for every seat.
